Consent Travel Letter
A Consent Travel Letter is required when a minor child is travelling outside Canada without both parents — even if travelling with one parent, a grandparent, or another adult, and even if the parents are not separated or divorced. School field trips outside Canada also require a consent travel letter signed by the parents.
The letter is signed by the non-travelling parent(s) in the presence of a Notary Public.
How to prepare your Consent Travel Letter:
Clients are responsible for preparing the document. Most clients use the Government of Canada's recommended template:
Government of Canada — Child Consent Letter Template (PDF)However, we recommend checking with:
- The Embassy or Consulate of the destination country, and
- The airline the minor will be travelling with
This confirms whether a specific format is required or if a version in another language is necessary.
If needed, prepare two versions: one in English and one in the other language (e.g., Spanish). Some clients bring both, as you cannot predict which official will review the documents at the airport.
Please note:
- We do not provide legal advice regarding the content of these letters, as each country may have different requirements.
- The Notary Public will only witness the signature.
- Please do not sign the document before attending your appointment.

Travel Document (for Refugees)
A Travel Document is a Government of Canada document issued to non-Canadian citizens — such as refugees and protected persons — who need to travel outside Canada but are not eligible for a Canadian passport.
If you are applying for a Travel Document, you may need a guarantor who has known you for at least two (2) years. If you cannot find a qualifying guarantor, you must complete Form PPTC 132 (Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor), which must be sworn before a Commissioner of Oaths or Notary Public. Legal Edge can witness this declaration for you.
Form PPTC 132 is available from any passport office or by telephone. You will also need to provide supporting identity documents (name, sex, date of birth, signature, and photo). We recommend submitting certified true copies rather than originals — we can certify those copies for you as well.
For full application details and up-to-date requirements, please visit the Government of Canada – Travel Documents for Non-Canadians page.
Please note: as a Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public, no legal advice is provided.
Invitation Letter (for Visa Applications)
If you are inviting family or friends to visit Canada, some visa offices may require that your invitation letter be notarized by a Notary Public. Legal Edge can notarize your letter once it has been prepared.
Clients are responsible for drafting their own invitation letter. The Government of Canada provides guidance on what to include. For up-to-date requirements, please visit IRCC — Letter of Invitation.
Please note: as a Commissioner for Oaths or Notary Public, no legal advice is provided.
Proof of Life (Fe de Vida)
For pension or government benefits, some organizations require a Proof of Life document to confirm you are alive and residing at your current address. We witness and notarize these documents quickly and professionally.
Using a notarized document outside Canada?
Once your document has been notarized, you may be required to complete an additional authentication step — known as the Apostille process — before it can be used in another country.
